At age 13-14, Toni attempted suicide by taking 42 pills following trauma from testifying against her stepfather for molestation and feeling blamed by her mother. She dressed in favorite clothes, wrote a goodbye note, and went to sleep. During her three-day coma, she experienced a beautiful bright white light with an overwhelming feeling of love and acceptance unlike anything before or since. A huge illuminated hand appeared, whiter than the surrounding whiteness, raised as if warning her to stop. A voice from the hand's direction said "Go back, it's not your time." She felt this was God or Christ speaking. Upon waking, she told her mother "it was so beautiful" and learned her mother had dragged her to the hospital alone despite being much smaller. Her mother's prayer was remarkably selfless: asking God to let her live only if life would improve, otherwise to take her to end suffering.
