Thea had two NDEs. First at age 4 (1976): During ambulance transport for severe illness with 40-degree fever, she suddenly found herself high above watching the ambulance on the winding road. She could see the landscape in minute detail with intense colors and could see very far all around. Years later on a bus following the same route, she recognized it with a strange feeling. Second experience (1979): While showing off swimming skills in a river, the undercurrent swept her to a drop-off near a bridge. After struggling then giving up completely, the water disappeared and she was surrounded by gentle light that didn't hurt her eyes. She experienced total peace and calm, thinking if this was death it was fine. A professional swimmer rescued her, and witnesses said she didn't look scared. She describes having an unhappy childhood with an alcoholic father and absent mother, making the peaceful experience wonderful and indescribable.
