In summer 1957, Thaddeus was in an isolation room with Klebsiella septicemia and gram-negative shock. While lying on his back awake, he suddenly found himself looking down at his body from the ceiling, with his position reversed (head opposite to feet). He saw himself very clearly with normal vision. Without hearing any voice, he had knowledge that he had a choice to stay or go. There was absolutely no value attached to either choice, which surprised him. He felt absolute calm and chose to stay, immediately returning to his body. He was startled and fearful of telling anyone, knowing he might be considered odd. He didn't share the experience except with his wife for ten years. When he saw his wife later that day, her face appeared changed with an ugliness he hadn't seen before - they divorced 2.5 years later. Within months, he became very religious and converted to the Episcopal church.
