Ted V was throwing rocks into a flooded riverbed when the bank collapsed and he was swept into a culvert. He saw his shirt buttons being ripped open and glasses torn off before everything went blank. In a dreamlike state, he saw a newspaper's front page held by a neighbor, with an article titled "Young Tucson boy drowns in flooded wash." As he began reading, everything went brilliant white and he felt a presence with a hand on his left shoulder. A gentle voice said "It's not your time." Instantly, he found himself sitting on the roadway edge watching the rushing water. His friend screamed and rode home on his bike. The next day, Ted and his father found his glasses stuck in a welded grate at the opposite end of the culvert - if he had gone through, he would have died. He has a three-inch scar on his left leg as a daily reminder.
