In 1985, a woman underwent a grueling 14-hour bilateral kidney surgery for embedded kidney stones (three quarter-sized stones in both kidneys with membrane growth surrounding them). She required transfusion during the surgery, which ultimately failed. The NDE occurred post-operatively in her hospital bed, lasting what seemed like hours or days though experienced as just seconds. She was patient #2001 for an experimental KWSL machine procedure new to the U.S. at UCLA.
During her profound NDE, she stood at a light unlike earthly light and felt she had finally come home after a long journey. Every question about the universe and life was instantaneously answered without words - the information entered her soul directly. She witnessed silhouettes of men, women, and children floating upward at an angle through fog-like light, all looking up while she watched and waited her turn. She was filled with happiness, safety, and love - everything humans seek on earth. The experience provided her with complete understanding of the universe and special knowledge about life's meaning. Her primary veridical observation was gaining vast knowledge that proved accurate in her life afterward - she became a published artist specializing in reverse painting on glass and a published poet with two books, skills she didn't have before. She gained mechanical abilities to fix things she'd never seen before and sometimes knows what will happen to people before it occurs. She can occasionally take away others' pain through touch. The experience left her with daily yearning to return to the light, finding earth to be "true hell" in comparison. She feels driven to paint what she saw at the light through reverse painting until she completes this mission.
