A 17-year-old high school senior and soccer player hit his head on a cupboard door corner, initially experiencing extended periods of sleep and head pain that felt like his head would explode. Despite a doctor diagnosing it as a viral infection and advising rest, he played in an all-star soccer game against the Germans where he collapsed and blacked out on the field. After coughing up blood at his girlfriend's house, he left a friend's house and fell down twice in the street, with the second fall triggering his near-death experience. He had developed three blood clots, a fractured skull, and brain hemorrhage.
During his NDE, he found himself floating above his body lying in the street, watching himself get progressively farther away. He entered a tunnel where the light grew increasingly brighter the farther he traveled from his physical form. He described his body below as merely an empty shell while experiencing a profound sense of quiet and heightened alertness. The tunnel experience was characterized by increasing brightness as he moved away from his physical body. His primary veridical observation was seeing himself from above lying in the street after his second fall, with clear awareness of the separation between his consciousness and his physical body below. He maintained very high alertness throughout the experience despite his critical medical condition. He was found unconscious and transported to the hospital by ambulance after his mother had just returned from the store. He required emergency medical intervention for three blood clots, fractured skull, and brain hemorrhage. The experience eliminated his fear of death, though he remembers the physical pain vividly.
