A woman developed double pneumonia after experiencing cold-like symptoms and a low-grade fever for several weeks. While at home under multiple blankets trying to get warm, she reached a critical temperature of 105°F and lost consciousness, experiencing what she describes as total blackness accompanied by a loud rasping sound.
During her NDE, she found herself in a beautiful sunlit field with incredibly vivid colors that she struggles to describe. The field stretched for what seemed like miles, and she knew she could not cross it. Far across the field was a carousel with several women dressed in floor-length pastel dresses carrying parasols. One woman left the carousel and walked across the vast distance to take her hand, immediately stopping her shaking and making her feel wonderful. Without words being spoken, the woman gently shook her head "no" and released her hand, returning across the field as the experiencer began shaking again and screaming for her to come back. The primary veridical element was her awareness of being transported to the hospital while unconscious. She experienced the journey and arrival at the hospital despite being in critical condition with double pneumonia and dangerously high fever. The woman who approached her seemed to be a spiritual being or guide who determined it was not yet her time. She was hospitalized with double pneumonia and took six months to regain full strength. The experience profoundly changed her spiritual beliefs and led her to become a hospice volunteer years later after hearing Dannion Brinkley speak.
