Neil had a drowning incident in 1956 at his grandmother's country home. While playing in a creek, he slid into a deep hole and went underwater. His father saw what happened from the front porch and jumped in to revive him. Neil remembers seeing air bubbles rise to the surface, then experiencing about 15 seconds of blackness.
He then found himself floating above his body, watching his family standing around as his father gave mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. His vision was expansive "like a cinema-scope movie." He particularly remembers his grandmother's navy polka dot dress. Though he tried to communicate, they could not see or hear him. He wondered what was happening before suddenly throwing up and returning to his body. Neil didn't understand the experience at the time but it haunted him throughout life. He began researching NDEs, Edgar Cayce, and psychics in 1965. The experience affected his religious beliefs and feelings about God and creation. He reports having vivid dreams after the NDE and feels like he might pop out of his body during meditation or before sleep. He also saw his grandfather's ghost in 1959. He is no longer afraid of death. --- Biblical Summary --- Biblical elements: The out-of-body experience and observing events from above align with accounts of spiritual experiences in scripture. The expanded consciousness and being in a "calm place watching everything" could reflect a spiritual realm perspective. Unbiblical elements: Neil developed strong negative feelings about creation and God, stating he "hates creation" and would prefer his soul to be "un-created." This nihilistic view contradicts biblical teachings about the goodness of creation and the value of the soul. His pursuit of psychic studies and meditation practices that induce OBEs align more with occult practices than biblical spirituality.
