On April 12, 1979, during surgery, Robert experienced an NDE starting on a pier above water with a bluish-white light the size of a baseball below. A man in a loincloth with shoulder-length brown hair dove toward the light. A soft voice urged Robert to follow, assuring he could breathe underwater. He jumped in and amazingly could breathe water, approaching a translucent blue-lit city with terraced houses and playing children.
Upon landing, deceased relatives approached including his father (died 1969), grandparents, aunts, and uncles. They formed a huddle with arms over shoulders, souls melding together in complete weightlessness. Through telepathy, they asked if he needed anything. A voice declared "Your mission is not complete. You cannot stay." He floated up and awoke in recovery. The anesthesiologist admitted accidentally putting him too deep and confirmed hearing similar accounts.
