At age 9 in summer 2002, Ruben went to the beach with family and entered the ocean until waves reached his neck. He fell into a hollow and began drowning along with his cousin who tried to help. In desperation, they climbed on each other's backs trying to breathe. Exhausted and swallowing water, Ruben gave up when suddenly he saw his entire life like a video, with every moment visible - a wonderful experience.
After the life review, he regained consciousness to find his cousin had escaped and was telling him to crawl. He managed to crawl out onto the sand, feeling heavy from swallowing water. The experience of seeing his complete life flash before him during the drowning left him believing in something after death, though he maintains doubts about God's existence.
