On New Year's Eve 1997, Rory was violently attacked by his best friend after rejecting romantic advances. The friend, significantly larger, repeatedly punched and then strangled Rory. During the strangulation, Rory experienced an OBE where he found himself lying on his back with no pain sensation, surrounded by a glowing beige light. Three beings appeared - two feminine and one masculine entities - who waved him away, shaking their heads as if to say "No, not now." He felt their compassion and sense that his death was tragic and unplanned. After returning to his body, he was gasping for air looking at his crying attacker. Police arrived and saved him.
