In May 1968, Rae experienced a life-threatening hemorrhage following knee surgery at Mackay Base Hospital. The bleeding could not be stopped despite medical intervention, and the staff told her family they could do no more. Then, as suddenly as it had started, the hemorrhaging stopped. Medical staff later told her they didn't know why or how she survived, as they had exhausted all possible treatments without success.
During this crisis, Rae remembers experiencing light and later waking up in the early morning hours telling nurses she was in pain. When the nurse asked why she hadn't told the doctor, Rae had no memory of any doctor being present, suggesting she had been unconscious or in an altered state during his visit. The entire experience happened within what she describes as a "cavern" where she felt herself leaving her body to enter light. She experienced heightened consciousness and alertness after leaving her body, feeling like space and time stood still or didn't exist. This was not Rae's only near-death experience. On October 4, 1971, she had a remarkably similar experience when hemorrhaging heavily about two hours after giving birth to her second child. The bleeding continued for several hours, and nurses called her husband back to the hospital, telling him there was nothing more they could do. Once again, the hemorrhaging stopped as quickly as it had started, and she felt completely at ease throughout the ordeal. These experiences fundamentally changed Rae's relationship with death and medical emergencies. She developed a complete absence of fear regarding death or any medical crisis. Even when she later suffered a severe car accident resulting in five wedge compression fractures of the spine and a fractured sternum, she had no thought of death or worry about the outcome.
