In 1984, Richard was hospitalized with total heart block following his second open-heart surgery when his heart stopped. The experience began dramatically when he sat up in bed and grabbed his brother by the neck. He then found himself standing with another person in the hospital hallway, looking at a cardiac monitor showing a flat line. With a sense of detached amusement, he laughed at the monitor thinking "wait till that guy figures out what's going on," not initially realizing the flat line represented his own stopped heart.
