In September 2002, Richard attempted suicide by drowning himself at the beach. After swimming past the waves, he dove deep, surfaced once out of fear, then dove again and intentionally inhaled water. His body convulsed uncontrollably as it fought to survive while he repeated "This will be over in a minute" to cope with the pain and anxiety of suffocating. After the pain peaked and shut off, he felt his heart racing then experienced his body "falling away" - not leaving it, but the body falling away from him.
Upon realizing he was dead yet still aware, Richard expected to see a tunnel and light but instead found himself as pure thought in complete nothingness - an abyss of total separation. The terror was overwhelming as he realized: "Am I going to be here in this place forever! This abyss! What have I done?!" He was fully aware he had taken his own life and the thought of eternal isolation in nothingness was unbearable. He understood he was in the "I AM" - total separation from all existence. Suddenly in the void, Richard heard a male voice say: "It's okay. It's all right. It's all good." This instantly transformed him from total terror to complete peace and acceptance. He gained immediate understanding about life's importance, the need to play life out regardless of hardship, and the importance of helping others rather than focusing on oneself. The abyss represented total separation from all connection. After hearing the voice, he saw a green laser light that accelerated toward him and he traveled on this beam of light to the upper left. Richard regained consciousness in an ambulance, shocked to be alive. A parasailer had spotted him floating face down and alerted the beach. His friend retrieved his body and lied about the timeframe, saying it had been less time than the actual 20+ minutes to ensure resuscitation attempts. Doctors found no brain damage despite the extended time without oxygen. The experience fundamentally changed his perspective - he no longer fears death, understanding that what we answer for is not religious doctrine but "What have you done to help your fellow man?" --- Biblical Summary --- Biblical elements: The experience powerfully illustrates spiritual consequences of suicide consistent with biblical warnings.
