In December 2003, Richard experienced a heart attack that resulted in clinical death. While he cannot provide extensive details about the experience itself due to its profound nature, he describes it as an incredible, transformational, and inspirational spiritual experience that fundamentally changed his life. The experience resulted in a quickening of his awareness and consciousness, complete loss of fear including fear of death, and remarkable insights into the human condition and the importance of relationships.
During his time in the intensive care unit and recovery, Richard experienced an extraordinary state of consciousness. Insights flooded his awareness and he felt incredibly close to something beyond ordinary reality. He was preoccupied with revelations about how life should be lived, experiencing a powerful sense of forgiveness and love that permeated his thoughts and being. He describes experiencing a kind of cosmic consciousness and had recollections of being in a lovely, ineffably beautiful environment or mental landscape that left him permanently changed. Richard's cognitive and intuitive abilities were dramatically enhanced. His thoughts moved at incredible speed, and he developed terrific abilities to sense future events and understand beyond his perceived cognitive limits. He experienced scenes from the world's future and gained a twofold purpose: to live courageously while honoring relationships and living deeper, and to educate others about consciousness and life after death. He felt an unshakable conviction that mankind's theories about life and death are wrong and that the truth is much bigger than logic can grasp. The experience profoundly transformed his relationships, particularly with family members. In the intensive care unit, he felt totally energized by his family's presence and sensed that they, possibly including deceased family members, had partially healed him. The experience taught him that relationships can transform us and that we are all essentially one.
