On June 2, 1985, Richard was riding his motorcycle to work in 105-degree heat when a car turned at the last second, causing a catastrophic collision. The accident resulted in both femurs being broken with multiple fractures - his left femur shattered into over 100 pieces and right femur broken in four places.
