Mandy underwent gallbladder surgery on May 25, 1992, but suffered cardiac arrest when excessive air pressure during the procedure compressed her aorta. She was clinically dead for 1 minute and 25 seconds. During this time, she experienced being rapidly pulled from her body through a tunnel-like enclosure into an incredibly bright light requiring eye adjustment. She found herself in a vast beautiful area (5-8 football fields) with green grass and the scent of roses, where rows of people were being greeted by deceased spirits.
Her deceased relatives stood in the exact order they had died, with her grandfather Lupe (d. 1955) first on the left and grandmother (d. 1991) on the right in her beloved green chair, possibly crocheting. Speaking in Spanish, her grandmother said she had "a little bit more to do" before joining the others. Mandy spoke with all 12 relatives, receiving a specific message from Uncle Donald (drowned 1989) for his brother Joe.
