During recess at middle school, Nicolas was put in a headlock by a friend while playing around. Despite struggling, he blacked out from the chokehold. Without warning, he found himself in a dark place with no time to feel afraid or any emotion. He was being pulled toward a small speck of light in the distance, not walking but being drawn to it. His dear friend who had died in a car accident months earlier appeared in front of him and gently stopped his forward motion. The deceased friend told him he needed to go back, that it was not his time. The friend put his hand on Nicolas's chest, pushing him back, which caused pain. He woke up with paramedics trying to revive him and was taken to the hospital. The experience made him realize there may be something beyond death. He later developed abilities to sense spirits around him and had other paranormal experiences. The encounter with his deceased friend convinced him that consciousness continues after death.
