At age 17, Paul was in a severe car accident when his brakes failed in a rainstorm, causing him to crash into a brick wall. The steering wheel lifted him up and smashed his face against the car's interior roof. He suffered massive facial injuries including fractures of both temporo-mandibular joints, nasal concha, mastoid, roof of mouth, and right orbital floor disintegration causing his eye to drop into the sinus cavity. Seven teeth were lost. After two hours unconscious in the hospital hallway, he became suddenly alert mentally while his body remained unconscious. He experienced profound calm and awareness, then felt himself floating up and out of his body to the left. He was stopped by feeling his parents' intense grief - he actually felt their pain as a shock wave. He drifted toward his mother's arm but she couldn't see him. Realizing they would eventually know he wasn't in pain, he resumed floating toward a thin bar of light in the upper left of the black void. A strong male voice telepathically shouted "NO!... NOT YET!" and he was slammed back into his body. He grabbed the priest's purple sash so tightly during Last Rites that he lifted himself up. The elderly priest calmly stroked his arm saying "Easy, my son."
