Monty was working on a car when a backfire explosion ignited his gasoline-soaked clothing, causing severe burns that required four months in a burn unit. The NDE occurred in the first one to two seconds of burning. During that microsecond, his entire life replayed before his eyes, but incredibly, it began with evolutionary history - starting as fish, progressing through higher animals, swinging through trees, experiencing the complete evolutionary spectrum leading to man, then reviewing his human life up to that moment. He watched this like a movie, completely relaxed yet energized. To his right appeared a large disc of very white light with beautiful singing and angelic melodies emanating from it, tremendously beckoning with promises of comfort, peace, and happiness. To his left, he felt the shared sensation of his skin burning with incredible pain. He faced a conscious choice between entering the peaceful tunnel or enduring pain for another sixty years of life. After experiencing millions of years of evolutionary life, the remaining sixty years seemed like "another sneeze." He chose to lean left, keep his eyes open, and endure whatever pain would come. He then experienced falling through a multi-colored spinning tunnel as he descended back to his body. Despite the trauma, he felt proud of his life choices, particularly his pacifism and avoidance of Vietnam, and felt he had played life's game fairly and kindly.
