Nick F was a 7th grade health science teacher who drove from Missouri for a night of celebration in September 1976. He suffered a severe automobile accident resulting in a skull fracture that required his heart to be restarted multiple times during over five hours of surgery. He remained in a coma for seven weeks. During this time, he experienced sliding through a dark, shiny black tunnel (like wet slate) into incredibly white light that was both like a laser beam and water. He encountered an old man with long white hair who made him feel as safe as a baby. The light was impossibly bright and filled him with nice, loving emotions including incredible peace, joy, and harmony. He felt united with the world and had a sense of understanding everything about the universe. Upon awakening from the coma, a man in a suit informed him of his serious accident and that he was lucky to be alive. The experience left him more certain that earth is not the end of the road, and he became even more positive as a person, cutting people more slack. Years later, he still considers himself fortunate to have had the experience and notes he should remember it more often.
