Mike was in a serious car accident in 1968 and taken to the critical care unit where his heart stopped. He left his body, aware of medical staff working on him, and was propelled through a tunnel toward a light. He emerged into a beautiful sunny field of golden grass and flowers, where he met his deceased grandfather sitting on a rock under a tree. Despite Mike wanting to stay in this peaceful place, his grandfather told him he must return as there were things he needed to do. Mike was then pulled back and returned to his body. His mother later confirmed his heart had flatlined and he accurately described physical features of his grandfather who died when Mike was very young.
