Marlin had a massive heart attack on both sides of his heart. After being asked twice about crack cocaine use (which would interact fatally with blood thinners), his heart stopped in the emergency room. Instantly upon death, he stood in total darkness before the brightest light he had ever seen that didn't hurt his eyes. A voice from the light repeatedly told him to "step into the light." Initially scared, he stepped in and was hit with overwhelming love, true peace, and contentment - feeling like he was home. He began seeing a garden with brilliant, rich colors unlike Earth. As he looked around, he was suddenly back looking at the doctor's face. He was angry at being resuscitated at his wife and mother's request. The experience brought him closer to God and eliminated his fear of dying. He notes contradictions between his experience and biblical teachings.
