Mel B experienced peritonitis from a burst appendix on New Year's Day 1984. His blood count was critically high at fifteen million to one. He died on the emergency room gurney and experienced leaving his body through a warm wave of energy. He saw a fog illuminated by an incredibly bright light with a stick-figure silhouette standing within it. He felt total bliss and peace. He was sent back when a surgeon began chest compressions and cursing at him. The surgeon initially doubted Mel would survive, requiring two surgeons to operate - one to empty and soak his abdominal organs to remove poison while the other operated on the burst appendix. Staff later said they didn't know how he survived. The experience eliminated his fear of death.
