Leonard was hit in the back of the head with a baseball bat during summer 1964, resulting in a life-threatening injury. He was taken to the hospital emergency room where he lost consciousness. During this time, he experienced floating above his body in the corner of the room where the walls and ceiling meet. He could clearly see himself lying on a stretcher or gurney with his mother beside him crying. He observed someone checking his arm for a pulse and then shaking their head negatively to his mother, apparently indicating no pulse was found. A second individual was then called over who also checked on him, said something to his mother, and then Leonard was wheeled into a treatment area. The experience ended at this point and he awakened a day or two later. The brief but vivid out-of-body experience allowed him to observe the medical emergency response to his condition from an elevated perspective.
