Kimberly was shot at age 12 with a shotgun at close range while fighting off an assault. She lost consciousness after walking out of the house and telling the woman to call her father. During transport to the hospital, she experienced an extraordinary out-of-body experience where she observed her body from above the operating table, seeing herself "sheet-faced" and the medical team working on her. She entered a tunnel described as like the inside of a tornado, filled with bright white misty light, and encountered dozens of shadowy figures in a horseshoe formation.
