On March 8, 1974, John was hospitalized in serious condition after an accident resulting in bilateral pneumothorax (both lungs collapsed). During his critical state, he found himself alone in a large space filled with bright white light that was warm and comfortable. Extremely tired and ready to sleep, he saw himself wrapped in bedclothes. He understood with clarity that to go to sleep meant to NOT wake up - death - and the decision was entirely his. He was at a conscious crossroads between life and death. His next memory was being in the emergency room bed, seeing the door open and his wife appearing, looking deeply worried. Wanting to cheer her up despite his previously immobile state, he raised his right hand and gave her a two-finger V sign. At that moment, he knew he would recover. The experience brought him complete peace, incredible joy, and a sense of unity with the universe. He felt he understood everything about the universe during the experience. This led to major life changes including returning to church after being agnostic, becoming deeply involved in faith, increased contentment with himself, and eventual divorce and new relationships that brought greater happiness.
