In March 2004, Kate accidentally ingested a large gulp of GHB (thinking it was water), approximately 10 times the intended dose. She was unconscious for seven hours with a heart rate of 4 beats per minute, on a respirator in a coma. During this time, she experienced sitting on her deceased grandfather's lap in his former kitchen. He placed an intricately carved wooden box before her that emitted glowing white light when opened. Upon looking into the light, she felt unexplainable calmness, belonging, peace, and love in a timeless suspension. The light transformed into a massive, beautiful reddish-orange sunset on a road. From a third-person perspective, she saw herself as a six-year-old walking hand-in-hand with her grandfather toward the sunset. When she asked where they were going, he replied "I'm taking you home, Sam, I'm taking you home." She didn't want to return but was sent back. Upon waking in the ER, she initially believed she was in Cornwall (where grandparents lived) rather than Mississauga General.
