In July 2000, Kat attempted suicide by overdosing on sleeping pills to escape an abusive marriage. After taking two bottles of pills, she lost consciousness but immediately rose out of her body. Her mother somehow knew something was wrong from 45 miles away and called 911. She observed her husband look at her non-breathing body and angrily leave in his truck, hearing his thoughts about being angry at her for "doing this to him." She watched paramedics restart her heart and floated in and out of her body at the hospital, experiencing a blissful void without pain. A voice repeatedly told her to "wake up now" and she felt excruciating pain when adrenaline was injected into her heart. She hallucinated for weeks afterward, seeing dead people who followed her saying she didn't belong among the living and should have stayed with them. She continues to see these entities when sleep-deprived. She feels she carries death within her, like the walking dead, obsessed with death and the undead. Though she holds on for her children, she feels something is always missing, as if her life belongs to someone else. She developed psychic abilities including flash-forwards showing future events, sensing when people are hurt, and knowing when someone will call or visit.
