On December 24, 2006, after losing her husband, home, horses, dogs, car, and job within two years, Karen attempted suicide by overdose. During her unconscious state, she found herself in a pitch-black void where she glowed softly within the darkness. Despite the blackness, she experienced complete relief, love, warmth, security, and acceptance without fear. She was able to surrender completely to this darkness. Having no family or children, she felt it would be okay to remain in the void forever and that everything would continue fine without her. She was brought back against her will and woke up angry at the medical staff for resuscitating her. The void experience was so profoundly peaceful and loving that she remains angry about being brought back to this day. When nurses asked what she had seen, they seemed disappointed when she described the void rather than a bright light. The experience transformed her from conservative Christianity to a more accepting view of all religions and ideals, and she developed empathic abilities, particularly with animals, along with precognitive experiences about people that later prove true.
