Juan Carlos was training at a Colombian Army school in April 1977 when he made a dangerous bet with companions about being thrown into a river while tied with cord and wearing full field gear. While waiting for rescue, he began bobbing in the water but eventually could no longer surface. Following army training to not breathe in water, he began sinking without taking in water. As he thought "It's over," he entered a tunnel of light with a much brighter light at the back. The tunnel became progressively brighter until he reached a warm, intense light of pure energy. He didn't want to return from this marvelous place. Remarkably, he then saw himself at the top of the water and was able to swim to the riverbank, astonishing over 200 companions who witnessed the event. Nobody could explain how he surfaced or who might have pushed him up. He felt frustrated about being brought back from the wonderful experience. The light at the end of the tunnel provided warmth, love, and peace. He experienced heightened awareness, time distortion, and gained a sense of having a specific destiny and mission in life.
