Leanne contracted viral encephalitis and spent two weeks in the ICU on life support. During this time, she experienced being in a vast dark space that felt "soupy," like liquid mercury. She was floating in this mercury-like substance with others around her on all sides, above and below. A lighted doorway appeared above her with light flooding into the dark space, creating a path. She struggled desperately to reach the doorway but realized she couldn't make it yet. She knew she had to stay and help the people crying out below, who she identified as her family. The experience was marked by intense fear for those below and desperation to reach the light. Following recovery, she underwent profound life changes, becoming a vegan and a practicing Wiccan, founding a religious group and becoming deeply involved with environmentalism and earth-religion movements.
