James F experienced an NDE on November 26, 1996, during a cardiac catheterization procedure performed the day after Thanksgiving. Three days earlier, he had suffered severe chest pains after a large dinner that dropped him to his knees, followed by persistent left arm numbness that he initially dismissed as indigestion. The catheterization was proceeding normally with the doctor nearly finished with half the procedure when suddenly everything went gray and James experienced heart fibrillation.
He began floating through what appeared to be a red tunnel, experiencing the most wonderful sensation he had ever felt. At the tunnel's end was a bright light that didn't bother his eyes, giving him an indescribable sense of strength and joy. The light provided feelings of warmth, wellness, happiness, and joyfulness. Upon reaching the tunnel's end, James saw a black table with a gold top and thin, tall, square legs. Seven people dressed in white clothing stood on the other side - six to his right and one to his left. A book lay on the table in front of the person directly to his left. James did not recognize any of the seven people but distinctly remembered the table's appearance. He wanted to continue toward the light with no other thoughts except this desire. One or two of the people (women) behind the table spoke to him, though he cannot recall what was said. Almost as quickly as everything had gone gray, he was brought back by the doctor using defibrillator paddles to restore normal heart rhythm. James believes that without the defibrillator, he would have been "in the hands of God that day." The experience transformed James's perspective on death. His father had taught him that when it's your time, there's nothing you can do about it. James now knows it wasn't his time and isn't afraid if today were the day.
