Jaime M underwent an outpatient cardiac catheterization on January 30, 2008, at 11:30am. The doctor administered local anesthesia to his right groin and began the procedure while they maintained normal conversation. Instantaneously, Jaime found himself on the patio of a two-story house with approximately 50 people gathered about 30 meters below. These people were celebrating with party music, all chanting his name "Jaime, Jaime" in what appeared to be a welcome party. The setting was beautiful with intense, bright light that didn't damage the eyes - a golden, intense light that imbued everything without causing blindness as looking at the sun would.
The feeling of being welcomed was the strongest Jaime had ever experienced, accompanied by a sense of fortune and happiness of unprecedented intensity. He described it as without doubt the most pleasant sensation of his life, experiencing happiness, peace, and quality happiness that made him feel united with the world. Among the crowd of people, Jaime recognized his deceased mother. As he began walking toward her, he felt his chest burn from a 300-joule defibrillator shock that returned him to the operating room. When Jaime asked the doctor what happened, he was told he had experienced a small cardiac arrest, described as normal for his condition as they uncapped the vein during rapid resuscitation. The experience lasted what seemed like 1-2 minutes to Jaime but was actually only 30 seconds. Following the NDE, Jaime transformed from a skeptic about life after death to a believer, though not in churches. He now knows humans are immortal and tries to be more tolerant, moving from a Type A toward a Type B personality. He attempts to do good in as many ways as possible, is no longer afraid of death, but fears punishment for bad earthly actions.
