On August 9, 1963, Jack underwent surgery to repair a massive diaphragm hole caused by microwave radiation exposure. Six days later, his incision ruptured explosively requiring emergency surgery. He developed aspiration pneumonia with stomach acid filling his lungs, leading to cardiac arrest for at least 17 minutes. He observed his dead body from above with its blue-gray pallor and watched the corpsman on the phone laughing before discovering his patient had stopped breathing. His entire life passed before him from an external perspective, feeling not only his own emotions but those of everyone involved in each event.
