On May 21, 2006, Haley was driving when her truck went off the shoulder. She overcorrected, causing it to flip and slide on the driver's side. Her head slammed into the road, knocking her unconscious, with her left arm trapped and losing massive blood. She left her body and stood in the road observing the accident scene - firemen, ambulance, police lights - feeling detached. She sensed a frightening presence calling her toward a bright light behind her. Knowing that stopping would mean death, she instead glided rapidly eastward down the familiar road toward home, passing known landmarks. The presence's light reflected past her onto the road ahead. She was suddenly yanked back when airlifted to the hospital. The experience lasted about a minute but seemed much longer.
