In October 1989, Gordy was on a hospital gurney when he saw his heart rhythm change to V-Tach on the monitor. Medical staff began intubating him and someone said "He's going into..." before he lost consciousness. He found himself outside his body near the ceiling with no physical form, only awareness. He could see the backs of doctors and nurses on his side of the gurney, with the overhead light fixture blocking his view of people on the other side. He read Dymo-labels on cupboard doors describing their contents. The room then dissolved to blackness with a bright light appearing in what would have been the corner. The light increased in size as if he was moving toward it, but before it took over, he returned to his body. The experience felt brief but seemed to last longer than the actual time.
