On November 21, 1986, Karen experienced pregnancy abruption at 8 months pregnant, hemorrhaging severely at work. After being taken by ambulance and left in the hospital hallway, she began feeling detached from her body, floating slightly and drifting in and out. She heard conversations in different rooms simultaneously and saw ambulance attendants in a break room buying Lance cheese crackers from a stuck vending machine, viewing from the top of the doorframe. She felt peaceful, happy, free, and weightless but kept being pulled back into her body. A nurse finally noticed her critical condition and called a code. The baby was declared dead but Karen insisted he was alive, having heard his heartbeat when alone. The monitor suddenly showed the heartbeat and emergency surgery saved both. The child Thomas had severe developmental delays initially but recovered completely. Later, Karen had a profound dream/vision of meeting an angel with white hair and wings who told her she had an important assignment to complete. Post-NDE she experienced electrical phenomena affecting light bulbs for months.
