Ellen underwent rib removal surgery and experienced post-operative complications. In her hospital room, she felt increasing distress and respiratory arrest despite calling for help. The corner of her room became an infinite black abyss that she recognized as a boundary to death. She fought against being pulled into this darkness, wrapping sheets around her wrists and holding the bedrails. After receiving oxygen, both lungs collapsed requiring intubation and paralysis for three months. While intubated with eyes taped shut, she found herself observing her body from outside, initially convincing herself it was a mannequin. Later visiting the ICU after recovery, she recognized the exact room and window she had seen during her OBE.
