On April 20, 2002, while hosting a cribbage tournament with 85 people including his daughter, Darren suffered a brain aneurysm (subarachnoid hemorrhage), fell to the ground, ceased breathing and his heart stopped with no pulse for 10-15 seconds. Two men present - a fire chief and seniors' home orderly - immediately began CPR. He was given Last Rites before surgery, and the neurosurgeon spent 6 hours searching before finding and repairing the problem at the last moment.
During the 10-15 seconds of clinical death, Darren stood in darkness looking at a bright light in the distance, brighter than the sun yet not hurting his eyes. Beams of light streamed out in every direction. As the light approached, he saw the shadow of a person in the center with visible head, shoulders, arms and legs. While comatose, he spoke extensively to his deceased parents (father died 1975, mother 1986). An entire congregation of Roman Catholic nuns prayed for him. The experience felt like eternity despite lasting only seconds. Darren now believes death is a doorway to another world where time doesn't exist.
