On June 12, 1982, Dan was driving with his girlfriend and her daughter when another vehicle turned directly into his truck, causing a head-on collision at 45 mph. He had no time to react, saying only "Oh God." He found himself somewhere up and behind the vehicle, perhaps 10-20 feet away, watching the two bodies next to his mold into the dashboard as if it were clay.
While "up and out" he felt no pain, fear, or emotion - concluding he was something other than human. Like a rubber band pulling him back, he returned to his body to see the vehicle inches from the windshield. He managed to push open the door, pull his companions out, and carry them across the highway. A woman appeared, smiling sweetly, identifying herself as a nurse and saying everything would be all right before disappearing. The experience transformed Dan from Catholic confusion to knowing rather than believing. He understands the duality of being - both body and spirit.
