Seven-year-old Della suffered serious complications from a tonsillectomy, hemorrhaging badly. Her parents took her to the hospital for cauterization after losing significant blood. She lay near death as medical staff told her parents "She won't live through the night." Her mother fell over the table sobbing while her father offered to donate blood directly from a nearby table, which was done and saved her life.
During the crisis, Della floated high above her body, touching the exposed pipes on the ceiling. A great, ubiquitous light surrounded her - brighter than the sun yet not hurting her eyes. She observed her mother's devastating grief and her father's desperate offer to give blood directly. When she awoke and tried to tell the nurse, doctor, and mother what she experienced, the doctor protested she couldn't have heard the conversation as she was unconscious. Her mother embraced her but warned her not to speak of such things or the doctor wouldn't let her leave the hospital. Years later as an adult, when she tried to discuss it with her parents, her devout mother (daughter of an English missionary) warned her not to speak of "the occult" and to pray for God's protection instead. The experience gave Della certainty that she was loved and had a purpose in life.
