Dean suffered a major heart attack with 99% vein closure from a blood clot on March 13, 1996. He was defibrillated over 28 times in the emergency room at Barton Hospital in South Lake Tahoe. During the eleven hours of medical intervention, he repeatedly left his body, watching everything from above the room. He only returned to his body briefly after each defibrillation shock, experiencing great pain before leaving again.
He observed all conversations in the room and saw his dead relatives. He spent considerable time in a tunnel during each death episode, where he encountered a being of light who was with his deceased father, appearing to have their arm around him.
