On January 2, 1982, Kathleen experienced clinical death during childbirth when the placenta was not completely removed after delivery. She hemorrhaged severely and her heart stopped from blood loss. She could hear everything around her while unable to move, feeling her heart race then stop. She then floated above her body surrounded by white light, experiencing overwhelming love, peace, and security unlike anything on Earth. She encountered unfamiliar people including a woman in 1800s dress with dark hair in a bun who said she would help her return. Kathleen prayed to return to care for her newborn daughter. She was violently pulled back into her body when resuscitation began. Later, she delivered the retained placenta tissue. The experience left her with temporary psychic abilities, dietary changes, and four years of therapy for anxiety. A psychic later identified the woman as her great-grandmother Mary based on the description.
