At age 11, Christy experienced a grand mal seizure and found herself in total darkness that was comfortable, with no pain. She felt she was on one side of a grey boundary with chaos on the other side. She was given a choice without anyone speaking - she somehow knew she could stay where it was easy or return to complicated chaos. She didn't want to go to the chaos side.
Her mother's crying pierced through the peaceful zone, making Christy worried about her. This maternal distress was the decisive factor that made her choose to return. The experience had an interesting spatial orientation - while in the darkness, she felt she was on the right side of the boundary with all chaos on the left. When she awoke, the left side of her head severely hurt, corresponding to the spatial orientation during the NDE. The experience left her feeling in control of her life, understanding she had made a conscious choice. Despite being only 11, she remembers the choice very vividly. She experienced time distortion, with her peaceful side moving slowly while the chaos side moved faster.
