In September 1990, Barbara was undergoing surgery to remove her gall bladder when she experienced complications. She remembers rolling over, then felt herself being pulled backwards toward the ceiling at great speed. Looking down, she saw a person on an operating table covered in green drapes and realized it was her own body. She felt no remorse at leaving it.
She was pulled backwards again at tremendous speed through complete blackness - a darkness she had never seen before. She was terrified and reached out trying to grab something to stop herself, but there was only blackness. The experience could have lasted seconds or years - time seemed not to exist. Then she heard a sound telling her to "Go Back." The voice was neither male nor female but was somewhat like music. The next thing she remembers was hearing voices telling her to breathe, with significant commotion occurring around her. The emergency staff were frantically attaching monitoring equipment. Her body felt like it was made of light - it still felt like a body but when she looked at it, it wasn't really there. The experience was described as totally mind-blowing, fantastic, and supernatural. The experience transformed her significantly. She became less rushed and panicky, with people mattering much more. She felt she had a purpose in life. She developed unusual abilities afterward: knowing when the phone would ring or friends would visit, feeling things about people, having a tremendous urge to heal, and seeing people's auras. Electronic devices would activate as she passed - radios turning on and light bulbs blowing when she touched switches. However, she cannot tolerate loud noises and bright lights since the experience.
