In May 1968, during Army basic training, Baldwin developed pneumonia after spending eight hours cleaning pots in extreme kitchen heat. Having suffered from asthma all his life, he initially thought it was an asthma attack. That night he became delirious with a temperature of 108°F, babbling and moaning enough to wake half the barracks. A drill sergeant immediately drove him to the base hospital where he lost consciousness in the waiting room.
During his NDE, Baldwin found himself lying on cold, wet ground that sloped upward. Using all his strength to stand, he realized he was in a tunnel. He saw numerous people ahead and an old lady approached him - whom he identified thirty years later as his mother's Aunt Mary. She led him through the tunnel past other people to a soldier in formal uniform with decorations and spats/leggings that seemed strange and unlike modern uniforms. Aunt Mary then led him toward a bright light that grew brighter as they approached. Through an arch or gate, he saw many people smiling. He was then returned to the soldier who asked if he wanted to stay or go back. Baldwin said he wanted to go back. The soldier beckoned to another soldier who appeared to be an officer in a trench coat, hat, and leggings, who also asked if he was sure he wanted to return. Baldwin confirmed yes. He then awoke to a female lieutenant nurse shaking him, was put in a cold shower, and recovered in five days. Thirty years later at a cousin's wedding, Baldwin learned his grandfather's brother had been killed in WWI. When shown a picture, he recognized the uniform with leggings. He later identified the officer as General John O'Ryan, Commander of the 27th Division (formerly New York National Guard), and claims to have pictures proving these identifications. The experience came together for him while stuck in traffic in a New York tunnel in 1973, and fully crystallized after hearing a talk show about NDEs. --- Biblical Summary --- Biblical elements: The tunnel experience reflects transition between earthly and heavenly realms.
