On New Year's Eve 1997, Armandina was at a party feeling depressed about relationship problems. Over five hours, she drank heavily from a liter of vodka, eventually consuming dangerous amounts. She fell unconscious, vomiting and hitting the cement garage floor hard. Her blood alcohol level reached 0.18 at only 115 pounds body weight. The doctor later said he was shocked she survived given her tiny frame, lack of food, and extreme intoxication.
During her unconscious state, while people debated whether to take her to the hospital, Armandina had a profound experience. A being with a slow, gentle, commanding voice asked her: "Do you want to come or do you want to stay?" making hand motions from forward to back. She felt the invitation clearly though she only heard rather than saw the gestures. She contemplated accepting death, thinking she wouldn't have to worry about bills, boys, or debt anymore. She reasoned aloud: "If I go I would not have to worry about bills, boys, debt or anything" but then said "I'm too young to die." Most importantly, she couldn't let Amy, who had recently lost her godfather and survived a near-fatal accident, live with the guilt of being the only one who tried to save her. In an instant, she returned to hearing everyone talk. The being's presence was calming, soothing, and made her feel privileged and honored to be given such a choice. She was bedridden for four days afterward.
