On August 23, 1984, Archie was in a car accident and died in the ambulance on the way to the hospital. He was clinically dead for eight minutes before resuscitation, making him the longest dead person brought back to life in Australian medical history at that time. The doctors only attempted resuscitation because they misheard how long he had been dead - had they known it was eight minutes, they wouldn't have tried.
During his NDE, Archie saw the Light and traveled toward it automatically, finding himself in a beautiful field of golden grasses. Five or six people were waiting for him, whom he later identified through old photographs as deceased relatives from Scotland, though he didn't recognize some at the time. He was shown a magnificent gold-colored city with universities of learning. He felt a powerful, God-like being at his immediate side. Though he was only gone eight minutes, it felt like he spent a full hour there. He was told to go back, do important work, and use his previously wasted life to do good for others. He felt a hard return to his body with slow initial recovery, becoming well after two months. The experience transformed his life dramatically - within 18 months of learning guitar, he toured with a famous Australian band overseas including the US. He started a charity for homeless teens in Melbourne, running over 3000 km and raising two million dollars, meeting the Prime Minister and State Premiers. He also played football for South Melbourne (now Sydney Swans).
