On March 5, 2014, Bonnie experienced episodes over four hours of feeling like she would pass out or die, accompanied by flashes of heat that felt like her blood was on fire. She called 911 and was taken to the ER where she was attached to cardiac telemetry. While alone in the room, she watched her EKG readout suddenly flatline. She was instantly out of her body, with her heart stopped for 60 seconds before resuscitation with an external pacer device. She was diagnosed with complete heart block requiring a permanent pacemaker.

When emergency staff attached the external pacer, her EKG pattern returned and she was immediately transferred to St. Joseph's Hospital for pacemaker insertion. The experience completely eliminated her fear of death, which she now sees only as a transition. She remembers the entire event as if "burned" into her brain like a photograph.
